So the partial vacate notice has finally been completely rescinded and life has gone on. I won't even begin to get into the Kafkaesque depths of deprivity - instead I come bearing a quick and simply gift of a mix tape.
Well it's about 10mins until I split out the door at work so I figured I'd take a quickie moment and post up the latest recorded mix (link and setlist in the extended entry) and quick list of some of the books I've been plowing through as of late (The Singularity Is Near, World War Z, Crooked Little Vein, Einstein's Dreams, Dexter In The Dark, and currently 2/3rds through Spook Country).
Unlike Weds set at The Lucky Cat, I hauled my own mixer up to Queens to rock the Jam Factory's party Saturday night and thus was able to easily make a recording of the set. So tracklist and superslowbutfree download link below...
So I had done this up last night, but for some reason I never made it past "preview" to "submit" so it's been sitting idle in the digital ethers since then. Sorry I wasn't able to get a recording of the set, but here's the tracklist anyway for the curious:
Last night went off excellente... couple of times my mix slipped outta sync but don't think anyone really caught it, at least they didn't say anything. Some GHETTO ass turntables and mixer they got there, but was able to work around it's limitations and quirks even so. Still feel really bad all the peeps pretty much fled the building before the other DJs got going, especially since the second DJ was totally killing it and nobody was there to appreciate it. Anyway, was talking to the man who put that shit together, Degoao, and he had mentioned sending me some sort of lolcat inspired Rove pic using my own words which I honestly did not recall receiving. So I went digging around for it today and sure enough he had sent it but I never noticed it since Mail.app put the image at the bottom of the email, but I think it's fucking brilliant hilarity and since I've been on a pic posting run lately, I figured I'd add it to the collection.
Not really, but I'll be out of town for the weekend though so I'm posting up the 420 mix now on 419, hoping it automagically appears when it's supposed to and heading home then to the airport.
Sorry, things have been somewhat calm yet hectic as of late and I have neglected to mention the latest installment of Fresh Pork. Been going through a reggae / brazilian / soul / funk / disco shit / breaks mood as of late (Toots, Upsetters, Cleo Galante, Raul de Souza, Commodores, etc...) sorta like DJ Shadow/Cut Chemist's Brain Freeze/Product Placement meets Madlib's Mind Fusions series, except you know much worse since it's me. Will be busting it at home for awhile, trying to see how best to make it all work. Stay tuned true believers..
I've been using an Ortofon Concorde Pro on my Technics 1210 since it came with the Concorde Cartridge, and it's a pretty damn good needle fidelity wise, but it wants a lot of counterbalance on top of being an ellipitical stylus, however instead of running the recommended 4grams of counterweight I've been using 1.5->2.5grams for 90% of my playback without a problem. It does however work pretty horribly in Serato Scratch for tracking the control signal on the records. Not to say it doesn't work at all, nor does the age of my turntable help, but it's just not as tight as it could be.
After feeling the extra little bite on Justin's TTX's last weekend got me (update: oops, he actually has M44-Gs not 44-7s) so I picked up a Shure M44-7 to play around with, and holy crap does it make a difference tracking the timecode in Serato, not all too surprisingly due to the fact that the M44-7 is rated for 9.5mV output compared to the Ortofon's 5mV, however it also sounds like ASS on a real record, though it sticks the groove a lot better with only 2grams of weight. And well the part about sounding like ass isn't exactly true, it does sound pretty darn good actually, however not as good as the Ortofon, and due to being so much hotter it makes the tiniest little pop to explode and cause the signal to clip since it's soo much hotter (and thus that much louder).
So the Ortofon is staying for playback/ripping and the M44-7 is relegated for Serato use, and that's about that.
Just got back from a long night out in Jersey City, where I was spinning at a buddy's birthday party. Dude whose party it was also spins, and thus we combined forces for ultimate house crushing ass shakery. A wide assortment of people there, and had a good time seeing the few I already knew again and also talking with a few new ones I met.
Got my entire mix recorded and mp3ified, but it's 162MB so while I've been uploading it since the moment it was finished encoding, it still ain't gonna be ready until I'm long gone in a sleep coma, so you'll be waiting on me to update this post with the link.; download here. Rest assured it had people dancing, yes even the dorks were shaking what their momma's gave them, and with tons of compliments I can only pat myself on the back and confess, as much as I often loathe the term, to having "killed it".
now... sleep! though I feel like I'm missing tons of words in this post, and might need a little 4:20am celebration, cause it's been a long ass week and past few nights have been late ones. oh and little word of advice, don't tell people about the details of your somnambulism and exactly what you have been apparently doing when you thought you were sleeping, for as much as they do so jokingly, rest assured they will ridicule you for something you can't control.
